Memory Verse Method | Erase the Verse

Help children memorize Scripture by making the words disappear! In this simple activity, the class repeats a verse as the teacher gradually erases it. As fewer words remain visible, children practice recalling more of the verse from memory.

Needed:

  • Whiteboard
  • Dry erase marker
  • Eraser

Alternative: Write each word on a separate sheet of paper and attach the papers to a wall or board with tape or tacks. Remove the papers one at a time instead of erasing words.

1. Introduce the Verse

Choose the memory verse you want the children to learn. Briefly explain its meaning, clarify unfamiliar words, and give a simple example of how children can apply it to their lives.

Write the complete verse and its Scripture reference on the whiteboard. Make the lettering large enough for everyone to read easily.

2. Read It Together

Lead the class in reading the verse aloud several times. Include the Scripture reference each time so children learn where the verse is found.

Before moving on, make sure the children are comfortable saying the words and understand what they mean.

3. Explain the Challenge

Tell the children:

“Each time we say this verse, I’m going to erase a little more of it. Your job is to say the whole verse, including the missing words! Let’s see if we can still say it when the board is completely blank.”

4. Erase and Recite

Erase one word, then lead the class in reciting the entire verse again, including the missing word.

Continue removing one word or a short phrase at a time. After each erasure, have everyone repeat the complete verse and its reference.

Adjust the pace to fit your class. Remove individual words for younger children or a new verse. Remove longer phrases when the children are ready for a greater challenge.

If the class struggles, supply the missing words and repeat the verse together before erasing anything else. Keep the activity encouraging and allow everyone to practice as a group.

5. Try It Without the Words

Continue until the entire verse and reference have been erased. Invite the class to recite both from memory.

Celebrate their progress! If time allows, ask for volunteers who would like to try saying the verse on their own. Keep individual participation optional.

6. Keep Practicing

Encourage children to repeat the verse throughout the week and share it with someone at home. Provide the verse on a small take-home card or include it in your regular parent communication.

Review it again during the next class to help children remember what they have learned.

Teacher Tip: Memorization should include understanding. Before finishing, ask, “What does this verse teach us?” or “How can we put this verse into practice this week?”
