Levitating Water

1st Angle

2nd Angle

Needed:

  • Canning jars / one with screen
    • I am sure you can find these cheaper elsewhere but click the link below to see the type of jar you need to use.  They must have the “canning ring”.  The included center disk is not needed.
    • 1 Ball 2 Quart Wide Mouth Canning Jar, Pack of 2
  • Index cards
  • 2 Bowls
  • Pitcher of Water

Lesson:

“These jars are us”… we ALL want to be filled with good things, RIGHT?

Call up a willing volunteer.  Have them get set up beside you. You should each have a big bowl to catch the water, a jar, an index card and a pitcher of water. Make sure the volunteer gets the jar without the screen.

“Okay, just do exactly what I do. First take the jar and fill it about halfway with water.

Each of you should fill your jar up that make sure that it is not revealed that your jar has a screen.

“Okay, now put your index card over the top of the jar and hold your hand flat against it. On the counter three we’re going to turn our jars over and hold her hand against the index card and make sure that no water spills out.”

Both you and the volunteer turn the jars upside down with the water being held then by the index card and your hand against the card.

levitate1“Now this is the crazy part. On the count of three we’re both going to remove our hands from underneath the index card and see if the water is still held in the jar.”

Countdown and remove your hands and both jars should hold the water although your volunteers could possibly dump out.

Let the audience be amazed for a while and then while continuing to talk, say,

“But whatever you do never ever remove the index card from under the jar“

While you are saying this, remove the index card from under the jar. The screen over the mouth of the jar will continue to hold the water inside the jar.

Let everyone be shocked again and then encourager the volunteer to also remove their index card. As soon as they do the water will pour out.

levitate2“No! You were supposed to do exactly what I did. Let’s try it again “

Go through the exact same process as before and when they fail again say…

“What is the difference?”

“Yours is just the same as mine right?”

Pretend to try to figure out the mystery and eventually show the class and your volunteer the fact that your jar has a screen over the mouth of it and the other jar did not.

“So a little thing like a screen makes that big of a difference? That’s pretty incredible! That is just like the Holy Ghost.”

“Some people think the Holy Ghost is just something nice and extra to have but it’s not all that important but we know that the Bible says it is absolutely essential to salvation! You cannot be saved without the Holy Ghost. You cannot go to heaven without the Holy Ghost!”

“It makes a BIG DIFFERENCE what is inside of you.”

Show that by tilting the jar a little bit you can pour water out and stop it by straightening it back up again.
