Main Point: Just as every player has an important role in keeping a spaceship running, every member of the body of Christ has an important part to play. We must learn to listen, communicate, and work together to accomplish God’s purpose.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:27 – “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
Activity Overview
If you’re looking for a hilarious, high-energy activity that teaches the importance of teamwork and communication, SpaceTeam is an excellent choice! This fast-paced cooperative game puts players in charge of a spaceship that’s falling apart, and the only way to survive is to work together.
Players must shout instructions, listen carefully, and operate controls that may be located on another player’s device. The result is a wonderfully chaotic experience filled with laughter, confusion, and plenty of opportunities to learn about teamwork.
This activity is especially effective for teaching children about the body of Christ. Just as every player has different controls and responsibilities, every member of the church has a unique role. When we communicate and work together, we can accomplish things that would be impossible on our own.
SpaceTeam is available as a mobile app, and there is also a physical card game version. The digital version is generally the easiest to prepare and play.
Supplies Needed
Digital Version (Recommended):
- 3–6 compatible smartphones or tablets
- SpaceTeam app installed on each device
- Devices connected according to the game’s multiplayer instructions
- Enough room for players to communicate with one another
- Optional: Projector or screen to help spectators follow the action
Physical Card Game Version:
- SpaceTeam card game
- Table or open playing area
- Time to review the rules and practice before class

Preparation
Before class, decide whether you’ll use the digital or physical version of SpaceTeam.
For the digital version, install the app on each phone or tablet you plan to use. The game is designed for multiple players working together, so prepare enough devices for your selected group.
Test the multiplayer connection before the children arrive. Make sure each device can join the same game and that everyone understands the basic controls.
If you’re using the physical card game, take time to review the instructions and watch a tutorial before presenting it to your class. This version requires more preparation and familiarity with the rules.
Teacher Tip: SpaceTeam can get extremely loud! Choose a location where enthusiastic shouting won’t disrupt other classes or services. Establish a few basic expectations before beginning so the excitement remains manageable.
How to Play
Step 1: Introduce the Mission
Gather your players and explain that they are now members of a spaceship crew. Their ship is experiencing serious mechanical problems, and they must work together to keep it functioning.
Each player has a collection of unusual controls, switches, and buttons on their device. As the game progresses, instructions appear telling players which controls must be activated.
Here’s the catch: The control you need may not be on your device!
You might receive an instruction to “Deactivate the Quantum Stabilizer,” but the Quantum Stabilizer could be located on another player’s screen.
To complete the task, you’ll have to communicate with your teammates and hope someone hears you!
Step 2: Start the Game
Once everyone is ready, begin the game and let the chaos unfold!
Players will quickly discover that everyone is receiving instructions at the same time. One person may be shouting for someone to flip a switch while another is desperately asking someone to push a button.
As the spaceship experiences more problems, the pressure increases. Players must communicate quickly, listen carefully, and cooperate to keep their ship operating.
Encourage the children to work together, but avoid giving them too much assistance. Allow them to experience the difficulty of trying to accomplish a task when everyone is talking at once.
Step 3: Discuss What Happened
After the game ends, whether the crew succeeds or their spaceship falls apart, gather the children for a short discussion.
Ask questions such as:
- Was it easy or difficult to communicate with your teammates?
- What happened when everyone was shouting at the same time?
- Could you complete every task by yourself?
- What happened when someone wasn’t listening?
- How could your team have worked together more effectively?
Allow the children to share their experiences. They’ll likely have plenty of funny stories about missed instructions, confusion, and last-second attempts to save the spaceship!
Use their answers to transition into the spiritual application.
Bringing the Lesson Home
Explain that SpaceTeam illustrates an important truth about the church.
In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul compares the church to a human body. Just as our bodies have many different parts that work together, the church is made up of many different people with different gifts, responsibilities, and abilities.
In the game, no single player had all the controls needed to keep the spaceship running. Everyone had to depend on one another.
The same principle applies to the church.
Some people teach Sunday School. Others sing, play instruments, greet visitors, drive buses, pray with people, or help behind the scenes. Every person has something valuable to contribute to the work of God.
Imagine what would happen if everyone in the church decided they didn’t need anyone else. Or what if everyone wanted to be in charge, but nobody was willing to listen?
Just like the spaceship in SpaceTeam, things would quickly become confusing and ineffective!
Read 1 Corinthians 12:21:
“And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.”
Explain that God never intended for us to accomplish His work alone. We need one another, and every member of the body of Christ matters.
Emphasize three important lessons from the game:
1. Everyone Has a Role. Every player had something important to contribute. In the church, God has given each person abilities and opportunities to serve Him.
2. Communication Matters. When everyone shouted without listening, the team struggled. We must learn to communicate clearly, listen to instructions, and treat one another with patience and respect.
3. Teamwork Makes Us Stronger. No single player could operate the entire spaceship alone. Likewise, the church accomplishes more when its members work together in unity.
Remind the children that being part of the body of Christ isn’t about being the most important person. It’s about faithfully doing our part and helping others succeed.
Final Thoughts
SpaceTeam is an entertaining way to introduce children to the importance of communication, cooperation, and unity. The fast-paced gameplay creates plenty of laughter, but it also provides a memorable illustration of what happens when people fail to work together.
Whether you choose the mobile app or the physical card game, the activity can help children understand that everyone has a responsibility and that success requires more than individual effort.
Just as the spaceship needs every crew member working together, the church needs every member of the body of Christ doing their part!
