Don’t Make a Mess – Cast All Your Cares Upon Him

About the lesson:

This lesson uses an incredible device called the “spill not” which allows you to put a cup of water onto a small flat surface and then swing it wildly without spilling a drop. I saw it online and did not believe it could be true but it is one of the very few things in life that are even better in person than it appears to be at a distance.

This is a pretty nifty device but it is not foolproof. You still need to make sure that you try it at home until you’re completely comfortable with it. The only two things I have found that will cause it to spill is stopping the “spin” when it is upside down or spinning it sideways which causes centrifugal force to sling the whole cup off.  If you play with it enough you will get to understand it pretty quickly.

What you need:

  • A “Spill Not” – The one I use can be purchased using the link below
  • A small cup about half full of water – clear plastic is best so the children can see that the water is really inside the cup although I have used a small Styrofoam cup as well
  • A bottle of water to refill the cup once you spill some out of it

Lesson:

Today we’re going to talk about the cares of this life. Yes, this cup does look like it’s full of water but really it’s full of the cares of this life.

“ACCIDENTALLY” SPILL SOME WATER OUT OF THE CUP

Oh no, I spilled some.  You see, that’s what happens when we try to take “care” of the cares of Life ourselves.

There are a LOT of things that we feel like we have to worry about.  Like, what is going to happen to me at school… will I pass my test? What about my family?  Are they going to be okay? What am I going to do when I get older? How am I going to pay my bills? How am I going to get from day-to-day and from paycheck to paycheck? Will my dog get sick?  Why did my Xbox break?

And so, we just continue to carry those cares around with this. We try to make it through life without making mistakes but that’s just impossible. The Bible says that we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God.  But thankfully, instead of going around worried all the time that we’re going to blow it, God has a much better plan.

Instead of  panicking and thinking, “what am I going to do, what am I going to do?” 1 Peter 5:7 says a wonderful thing. Jesus said, “Cast your cares upon me for I care for you.”

So all we need to do is to take the cares out of our hands and put them in His hands.  IT IS SO SIMPLE!

Just say, “Jesus, I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know how to handle this. I don’t know how to deal with this situation but God please help me.” And God WILL DO IT!

And then we don’t have to worry about the cares of this life. Like this. Check this out.

PULL OUT THE “SPILL NOT” DEVICE

So this here today is going to represent Jesus. Jesus said just put your cares on Me and watch how much easier life gets. Before, we were so worried about people bumping us and us making another mistake but it doesn’t have to be that way. We are getting upset constantly. But Jesus is asking, “Why don’t you just give them to Me and I will take care of the rest?”

SET THE CUP OF WATER ON THE SPILLNOT AND HOLD THE SPILLNOT BY THE STRAP

God says, “Trust me when things start get crazy.”

BEGIN TO SWING THE SPILLNOT SLIGHTLY

Hey, I didn’t have to worry about that!  That was awesome!

And now when things bump you, you don’t have to make a mess. And if really crazy things start to happen to you. I mean really crazy things. Things that are completely out of gear control start happening…

BEGIN TO SWING THE SPILLNOT IN A COMPLETE CIRCLE

You still don’t have to worry about it. Because God has got it all taken care of.

POUR OUT A LITTLE BIT OF THE WATER FROM THE CUP TO SHOW THAT THE WATER IS STILL THERE

The cares are still there. They didn’t go anywhere. But now that they are in God’s hands you just don’t have to worry about it like you did before.

But when you put them in Jesus’s hand, He just says, don’t worry about it. Just give them to me. I’ll take care of it. Everything is going to be okay. You don’t have to worry about a thing.
