Diggin’ Through the Trash | The Dangers of Television and Hollywood

What you need:

  • A new, clean, small trashcan or a clean one with a clean liner and no holes
  • A couple of sealed food items in an air-tight wrapper such as string cheese, pop-tarts, or a banana.
  • Lots of “clean” but disgusting look trash such as wadded up paper towels, coffee grounds, squirts of ketchup, mustard and BBQ sauce, chips or crackers, toilet paper and anything else that looks really gross but you know the source of.

About the lesson:

This lesson teaches about why we should be careful where we get our entertainment from.  It is a really simple but effective lesson which the squeamish should probably shy away from because it can get gross. The boys in your class will love it and the girls will likely squeal a lot and peek through their fingers in exaggerated horror.

Now… I want you to know that this trash and trash can are CLEAN!  Brand new and never used before… every item I put in the can came straight from my refrigerator or pantry just a few moments before and while it looks bad, there wasn’t anything included that was really bad.  When you start mixing stuff in a trash can though, no matter how good the items are, the final outcome is just disgusting.

This is a great way to teach your kids about the dangers of television, Hollywood and many video games.  Hopefully they can come away with a visual representation of how damaging this can be.

Lesson:

PULL OUT TRASH CAN AND SET IT ON THE TABLE

Now I’m not sure about you but I have found that many people throw away perfectly good things that still have a LOT of use in them.

Has anyone found or seen things sitting on a curb that people are getting rid of and thought, “What could be wrong with that?  The bookshelf looks just fine!”

I sure have… in fact… sometimes I take things a step further than that even.   I feel that if people will throw away perfectly good BIG things that they probably will also throw away perfectly good OTHER things like… well… like…

You know… let me just show you.

START DIGGING THROUGH THE TRASH AND PULLING OUT SOME REALLY DISGUSTING STUFF LIKE BABY DIAPERS, COFFEE GROUNDS / FILTERS, STAINED PAPERS

I know there just HAS to be some good stuff in here.

Hmmm… nothing yet… but I KNOW there is some good stuff in here.  If I just look long enough I am sure I will find it.

Yeah… I don’t really like most of this stuff and I don’t agree with it being in here but… when I find something good, wading through all of this gross stuff will be worth it.

KEEP DIGGING UNTIL YOU HAVE PULLED ALMOST EVERYTHING OUT AND THEN PULL OUT…

Like… like… this! Check this out! I KNEW it would be worth my time and worth getting so dirty and disgusting..

PULL OUT STRING CHEESE – STILL IN WRAPPER

Why would ANYONE throw this away?!  There is nothing wrong with it! No spots, no mold… NOTHING!

SHAKE OFF THE STUFF CLINGING TO IT.  WIPE OF “MOST” OF THE GROSS LIQUID

You know… I just can’t wait.  I worked hard to find this and here it finally is.  I get to enjoy it now.

OPEN THE STRING CHEESE AND TO HORROR AND SCREAMS OF THE AUDIENCE, EAT IT.  AFTER YOU HAVE CONSUMED IT, OR AT LEAST TAKEN A FEW BITES…

What? I don’t understand… this is what people do with television, video games and movies ALL THE TIME!

There is so much GARBAGE on the TV… so much violence and immorality… so much sin being portrayed but most people don’t think anything about it.  Many video games are nothing more than interactive movies full of sin and violence and movies are full of things the bible wants us to stay away from as well.

BUT PEOPLE SAY that there are SOME GOOD THINGS on TV… and I won’t argue. There legitimately are.  But WHY would you want to get yourself dirty and nasty digging for that one tiny good thing that is buried in a pile of trash?!  That’s just disgusting!
