The GIFT of the Holy Ghost | Object Lesson

Needed:

  • A wrapped gift box (to represent the gift of the Holy Ghost)
  • A few small personal items (optional, for illustration about gifts)

Begin by setting a joyful tone. Let the class know that you’re celebrating something amazing—the greatest gift anyone could ever receive. You might hold up a wrapped box to capture their attention and talk briefly about how everyone loves receiving gifts. Mention that some gifts are expensive or extravagant, but others are special because of who gave them. Use a few quick examples, like a small plant from a niece or a pair of shoes from a loved one. Help the children recognize that the best gifts are not always the most expensive, but the ones that come from the heart.

Then, guide them into the spiritual point. Explain that Jesus has a gift prepared for each of us—the Holy Ghost. Tell them that this gift was not free for Him to give, even though it’s free for us to receive. He paid for it with His own life. He shed His blood and rose again so we could have the power of His Spirit living inside us.

Help the children understand what the Holy Ghost really is. Explain that it’s God Himself coming to live inside our hearts. Use a simple example they’ll remember: just as you can’t fill a car with power until you remove the trash, God can’t fill our hearts until we take out the sin. That’s why repentance is so important—it’s how we make room for God to move in.

Make it clear that the very same God who made the sun, moon, stars, and animals wants to live in their hearts. Encourage them to think about how incredible that is. Then, explain how we know when we’ve received the Holy Ghost. The Bible shows us that when God fills someone with His Spirit, they speak in a language they’ve never spoken before. It’s called “speaking in tongues,” and it’s the evidence that the Holy Ghost has come inside.

Tell the story of the Day of Pentecost from Acts chapter 2 in simple, vivid language. Describe the believers gathered in the upper room, praying and worshiping, when suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the place. Tongues of fire appeared over their heads, and every one of them was filled with the Holy Ghost, speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gave them the ability. Make it come alive for the children, helping them imagine the excitement of that moment.

Connect that miracle to today. The same Holy Ghost that filled the believers in Acts 2 is still available right now. Tell the class that God wants to live inside them so He can help, comfort, and strengthen them. When they’re scared, sad, or unsure, the Holy Ghost gives courage, peace, and wisdom. When they pray, He gives them the words to speak.

Close by reminding them that this is the most valuable gift they’ll ever receive. The Holy Ghost isn’t just something for Sunday—it’s power and comfort they can use every day. Jesus gave His life so they could have it, and He’s still offering that gift today. Encourage them to open their hearts in prayer and ask God to fill them with His Spirit. Explain that when they repent, worship, and believe, God will meet them right where they are—just like He did on the Day of Pentecost.
