Stronger When Full | Object Lesson

Needed:

  • Two identical plastic bottles (one empty, one full of water)
  • Optional: a small towel in case of spills

This simple but powerful demonstration shows the difference between living empty and living full of the Holy Ghost. It helps children understand that when we are filled with God’s Spirit, we can withstand the pressures of life that would otherwise crush us.

Begin by holding up the empty bottle for the class to see. Ask the children if they think anyone could crush it with their hands, then invite a volunteer to try. The bottle should collapse easily, folding under just a little pressure. Use this to show how weak an empty bottle is, and explain that it represents a person trying to live life on their own without the Holy Ghost. When life’s problems come—temptations, disappointments, sadness, or fear—someone who is spiritually empty will often give in or fall apart.

Next, hold up the second bottle, the one filled with water and tightly capped. Hand it to the same volunteer or another child and let them try to crush it. They’ll quickly see it’s almost impossible to do. Ask them why they think that is, and guide the discussion until the class realizes the bottle can’t be crushed because it’s full.

Now connect that idea to our spiritual lives. When someone is full of the Holy Ghost, they have strength on the inside that can’t be seen from the outside. The pressures of life still come, but they can’t crush a heart filled with God’s power. Just as the Bible says the rain falls on both the just and the unjust, everyone faces challenges—but those who are filled with God’s Spirit can stand firm. Teach that praying, reading the Bible, obeying parents, and staying faithful to church are all ways we keep our hearts full.

Hold up the empty bottle again and point out that it can be filled. Even if we’ve made mistakes or drifted away, it’s never too late. Through repentance, baptism in Jesus’ Name, and the infilling of the Holy Ghost, God can fill us again. Once we’re full, the enemy can’t crush us as easily as before.

Finish the lesson by reminding the children that just like the bottle, they need to stay sealed and full of God’s Spirit. If the top comes off, what’s inside could spill out and leave them vulnerable again. Encourage them to stay “prayed up” and connected to God every day so His Spirit can keep them strong and steady no matter what life brings. When they stay full of the Holy Ghost, they don’t just survive the pressure—they stand tall through it.
