Rapturous Explosion / When Will It Blow? | Rapture and Alka-Seltzer

1st Angle

2nd Angle

Needed:

  • Film canister or similar small container (the “rocket film canisters” found on Amazon work best)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets (you’ll only need about half a tablet for each reaction)
  • Water
  • Optional: small plastic spacer (such as a short piece of clear plastic straw or ½” PVC pipe)

Before class, test this experiment so you know exactly how much water and tablet to use for the best effect. Typically, filling the canister about one-third full of water works well. The goal is to create enough pressure for the lid to pop off with a surprising burst, but not so much that it happens immediately. The timing should be unpredictable, just like the event it represents, the rapture.

To prepare, pour water into the film canister about one-third to halfway full. If you’re using a spacer, place it inside the canister so it sits just above the waterline. Set a small piece of the Alka-Seltzer tablet on top of the spacer and secure the lid tightly. Nothing will happen yet. The spacer keeps the tablet away from the water until you’re ready to start the reaction.

When it’s time for the demonstration, tell the children that today’s lesson is about something incredible that the Bible talks about, the moment when Jesus returns to take His people home. As you begin talking, turn the canister upside down and set it on its lid so the water now covers the tablet. The reaction will start immediately, though it will take a few moments before anything happens. This is the perfect time to begin explaining the message.

Share Matthew 24:36–42, where Jesus said that no one knows the day or the hour of His return. As you read and teach, remind the class that the Bible tells us to always be ready, because the rapture could happen at any moment. While you’re speaking, the pressure inside the canister is building, but no one knows when it will blow. Keep teaching naturally until suddenly, POP!, the lid flies off or the canister launches into the air. The surprise will capture the entire class’s attention.

Pause and let the excitement settle, then draw the connection clearly. Explain that just like no one in the room knew the exact moment that canister would burst open, no one knows when the rapture will take place. It could happen at any time. The Bible says two people might be working side by side, one will be taken, and the other left. The only way to be ready is to live for God every day.

If you’d like, you can repeat the experiment a second time with a new canister. Vary the amount of water or tablet slightly so the timing changes. This helps reinforce the idea that we can’t predict when it will happen, only that we must stay prepared.

End the lesson by reminding your students that being ready for the rapture means following God’s plan of salvation, repentance, baptism in Jesus’ name, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Encourage them to live in such a way that whenever that moment comes, they’ll be ready to meet Jesus.
