The short version is that you are hiding the DIRTY handkerchiefs INSIDE a tube connected to one of the CLEAN handkerchiefs.  When you pull out the clean ones, you are pulling them ALL out.

Here is a short video illustrating how it is done: https://youtu.be/kCvFjjv-yXk

This lesson powerfully illustrates repentance and forgiveness in a way children can both see and remember. The goal is to show how no matter what we’ve done, God can wash away our sins completely and make us clean again.

Begin by showing the children your box labeled “Repentance.” Tell them this box is going to help demonstrate what happens when we bring our sins to God. Have three dirty handkerchiefs ready—each one representing a different sin, such as lying, cheating, or disobedience. You can build up the anticipation by talking about how “gross” or “stinky” sin is, making sure to connect it to behavior they can relate to—things like being dishonest, saying hurtful things, or refusing to listen when God or others are trying to help.

As you place each dirty handkerchief into the box, explain that sometimes people feel like they’ve messed up too badly for God to forgive them. Maybe they’ve done the same thing wrong over and over again. But God’s Word says He is faithful and just to forgive us when we truly repent.

After all three handkerchiefs are in the box, shake it gently. Make it fun—say you’re “giving it to God,” or “putting it through the washing machine of forgiveness.” You can even have the kids say, “Wash it clean, Lord!” together as you shake the box.

Now open the box and slowly pull out the three clean white handkerchiefs. Show the kids that there’s no trace of dirt left. The stains are gone! Use this as a visual to explain that when God forgives us, He doesn’t leave anything behind. The Bible says He throws our sins into the sea of forgetfulness, never to be remembered again.

You can point out that some people might think, “Oh, it just looks clean on the outside. Maybe the sin is still hiding somewhere.” But you can use the trick’s secret (the hidden compartment) to make your point—there’s no dirt left inside because when God forgives, He cleans us completely. It’s not a halfway fix. It’s a total transformation.

Finish by reminding the class that everyone makes mistakes, but a righteous person gets back up every time they fall. Repentance isn’t just saying sorry—it’s turning away from sin and walking in a new direction toward God. Encourage the children to talk to Jesus whenever they’ve done wrong, knowing that He always forgives and always makes us new again.

This object lesson helps them see repentance not as a scary thing, but as a gift—a chance to start over, clean and forgiven.
