Jesus Is the Light | Fire and Salt | Object Lesson

Needed:

  • Hand sanitizer (must contain alcohol — most do; check the label)
  • Table or smooth surface (nonflammable if possible, or covered with a fire-safe tray)
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Table salt
  • Cup or bowl of water for safety and for wetting hands
  • Fire extinguisher or damp towel nearby (always have safety precautions ready)

This simple but powerful illustration visually shows what it means for Jesus to be the light of the world and how we, as His people, are called to shine that light to others. It’s memorable, fast, and exciting—but it absolutely requires strict care and adult supervision. Never allow children near the flame.

Begin by explaining that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” Then tell your students that today you’re going to show them something that represents how His light shines in dark places. Dim the lights slightly if possible.

Pour a thin layer of hand sanitizer across a smooth table surface in the shape of the word “Jesus.” (Practice this ahead of time; the letters don’t need to be perfect.) The sanitizer will spread evenly and will be mostly clear, so the audience may not see it right away.

Once it’s in place, carefully light one end. The alcohol will ignite with a faint blue flame, forming the glowing outline of the word “Jesus.” It’s mesmerizing and beautiful, especially in a darker room. Explain that this light represents Jesus shining in a dark world—powerful, pure, and beautiful.

Next, sprinkle a little table salt over the flames. The sodium in the salt causes the fire to flare brighter and burn with a golden glow. Explain that Jesus also called His followers “the salt of the earth.” When we live for Him and share His love, we make His light shine even brighter for the world to see.

If you want to take it one step further, show how the flame can safely be touched very briefly when your hand is wet. Dip your hand in the bowl of water, then quickly and smoothly pass it through the flame. The thin water layer on your skin prevents burns by evaporating faster than the flame can heat it. Never hold your hand in the flame; just move it through quickly for visual effect. This part should only be done by an adult and only after testing carefully.

Wrap up the lesson by explaining that just as you saw the light spread across the table, the light of Jesus spreads through us. When we add the “salt” — our good works, kindness, and love — His light shines even brighter to those around us.

Finish with Matthew 5:14–16:
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Encourage the children to be that light — to let their words and actions reflect Jesus everywhere they go.

Important Safety Notes:

  • Perform this demonstration only with another adult present.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher or wet towel ready.
  • Never allow children to come close to the flame or to try this themselves.
  • Make sure the flame is completely out before touching or cleaning the area.
