Holiness Inside & Out | Object Lesson

Needed:

  • 3 cups (one dirty on the outside, one dirty on the inside, and one clean)
  • A pitcher of clean water

Lesson Overview:
This lesson shows that God doesn’t just want us to look right on the outside, He wants our hearts to be clean too. It’s based on Matthew 23:25-26 where Jesus tells the Pharisees that cleaning only the outside of the cup isn’t enough.

How to Teach It:
Begin by pretending to kindly offer your helper (or another volunteer) a drink of water. When you hand them the first cup, make sure it looks dirty on the outside but is clean inside. Act surprised when they refuse it! Ask why they don’t want it, they’ll say it looks gross. Explain that even though the water is good, nobody wants to drink from a filthy cup.

Then bring out the second cup. This one looks clean on the outside, but the inside is full of dirt or dark goo. When they see what’s inside, they’ll refuse again. Ask the class why. Talk about how that cup looks good at first glance, but it’s not truly clean where it matters most, on the inside.

Finally, bring out the third cup, sparkling clean both inside and out. Pour the same clean water into it and hand it to your helper. This time, it’s acceptable. Use that moment to connect the dots:

“This is how God wants us to be, pure and holy inside and out! It’s not enough to just look like a Christian on the outside. God cares about our hearts, our thoughts, and what we do when no one else is watching.”

Teaching Points:

  • The first cup represents people who live sinful lives openly—they don’t try to hide it.
  • The second cup represents those who look right but are hiding sin in their hearts (hypocrisy).
  • The clean cup represents someone who loves God both inside and out, living right and keeping their heart pure.

Application:
Encourage the kids to let God clean every part of their lives, what others see and what only He can see.
