God Gives Us So Much – Dove Pan | Object Lesson

This is an object lesson that can help you teach your class about how God ALWAYS gives us more than He takes! He gives us so much in return for the paltry things we give Him.

Needed:

  • A dove pan (also called a chick pan) magic trick
  • A metal or fireproof tray or shallow pan
  • Small slips of paper
  • A lighter or long match
  • (Optional) A bowl, dove pan insert, or hidden compartment filled with something abundant—such as confetti, candy, or colored paper—to represent God’s blessings

Preparation and Setup

This lesson powerfully illustrates how God’s generosity far exceeds anything we could ever give Him. It’s a reminder to children that no matter how much time, effort, or sacrifice we offer to God, He always gives back more—pressed down, shaken together, and running over.

Before class, prepare several slips of paper with words representing things we give to God. These could include time, prayer, reading the Bible, holiness, our plans, our dreams, or obedience. You can personalize them depending on your class age or the lesson focus.

Next, set up your dove pan. The dove pan is a classic illusion prop with a hidden compartment built into the lid. The deep rim of the lid conceals an extra tray that fits snugly inside the base. When you lift the lid to show the pan empty, it appears completely bare. But when you replace the lid and lift it again, the concealed tray drops into place—revealing whatever you’ve hidden inside.

Practice using this prop ahead of time until your motions are smooth and natural. If you plan to add extra impact, you can safely burn the papers in the bottom pan before placing the lid on. Just be sure to take every safety precaution—use only a small flame, keep a safe distance from children, and never leave fire unattended.

Inside the lid’s hidden tray, place your “blessing reveal.” This could be candy, confetti, or any colorful item that symbolizes abundance. When you perform the reveal, this will represent how God multiplies what we give Him.

Teaching the Lesson

Start by engaging the children in a short discussion about all the good things God has given them. Let them call out examples—peace, love, the Holy Ghost, baptism, salvation, friends, family, the church, and heaven. Build excitement as you list God’s blessings together.

Sometimes, people begin to think more about what they’ve given to God than about what He’s given to them. Explain that we often give our time, prayers, and obedience to God, but in truth, we could never outgive Him.

Hold up each slip of paper one by one, explaining what it represents. As you talk, place each paper in the bottom of the dove pan. These papers symbolize our sacrifices—the things we give to God because we love Him.

Once all the papers are inside, explain that sometimes giving feels like losing. We give up things that are comfortable or easy. It can feel like parting with something valuable. Carefully light the papers (if you’re using fire) and let them burn safely. Watch as the smoke fades, and use that moment to teach: from our perspective, it might look like everything is gone. But with God, what feels like loss is actually preparation for blessing.

Place the lid onto the pan, using this as your transition point to remind the class that God never takes without giving back more. When we surrender what we have, He replaces it with things far better—joy, peace, purpose, and eternal life.

After a pause, lift the lid and reveal the overflowing pan of blessings. This visual surprise always gets a big reaction from the kids! Explain that what God gives in return is more than we could ever earn or imagine. Even though we may give our small sacrifices, His gifts back to us are abundant, beautiful, and overflowing.

Take a few moments to let the truth of the lesson settle in. God doesn’t take things away to make us empty—He does it so He can fill us with something greater. When we give Him our time, He gives us purpose. When we give Him our worship, He gives us joy. When we give Him our lives, He gives us salvation and the Holy Ghost.

Connect this idea to salvation. When we repent and lay down our sins, it may feel like we’re giving up everything, but God gives us something infinitely better in return—His Spirit living inside of us and the promise of eternal life with Him.

Encourage the children to think of ways they can give more to God—not because they have to, but because they know His blessings always overflow.

This lesson works best when delivered slowly, allowing each stage to sink in. The act of writing, offering, burning, and revealing makes a lasting impression on children and visually reinforces the truth that you can never outgive God.

Above all, practice the dove pan illusion until you can perform it confidently and naturally. Timing and smooth movement are key to creating that moment of wonder. When done right, this simple trick turns into a powerful teaching tool that will stick with your students long after the class ends.
