Evolution Vs Creation | Fearfully & Wonderfully Made

What you need:

  • Model of a molecule (find online)

Psalm 139:14 – I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

The chances of something as complex as ANY of the molecules in us coming together by chance is absurd.

This lesson, best suited for your slightly older kids who can grasp some foundational concepts, uses a visual aid that proves God’s greatness better than a textbook ever could. You need a replica of a heme molecule (the part of hemoglobin that grabs oxygen). If you can’t get a full molecular model, use large, distinct colored blocks or pieces to represent the different atoms—the goal is to show complexity.

The central truth here is found in Psalm 139:14“We are fearfully and wonderfully made.” This is your chance to demolish any childish ideas of random chance and show them that they are a perfectly engineered masterpiece.

Instructional Flow: The Small Part of a Big Miracle

Start by holding up your model. Ask the children if they can guess what this complex, tiny thing is. Let them guess wildly—it’s good for a laugh. Tell them this is just a small part of a molecule called heme, which is found inside the red blood cells flowing through their bodies right now. It is part of hemoglobin, and its only job is to carry oxygen.

Explain the job simply: when they breathe in, this little thing connects and grabs the oxygen in their lungs. Then, it travels through the blood and drops off the oxygen everywhere—to their brain, their toes, their fingers, their heart—all over their body. Without this tiny structure, they couldn’t even take one breath! Now, point out the different colored pieces that make up the model, mentioning the iron and other components. Just look at how many pieces have to be perfectly arranged!

This is where you make the case for the Creator. Tell the class that some people believe all of this—this perfect, tiny machine that keeps them alive—just happened by chance through evolution. Look at the molecule again. Ask them to consider the chances of four nitrogen atoms, a single iron atom, and all these other pieces just bumping into each other in the dirt and arranging themselves perfectly to grab oxygen. Statistically, the chance is ZERO! Look at the complexity of this small part; it shouts that there was a Master Designer. Finally, bring it back to the beginning. Tell the children the iron and these other molecules are just found in regular dirt and dust. Remind them that the Bible says God formed man from the dust of the earth. He took the dirt (all these molecules) and formed Adam’s body. But then what was the final, crucial step? He blew into him the breath of life! The oxygen, carried by this very molecule, brought Adam to a living soul, and God put His Spirit in him. This tiny molecule is a constant reminder that God is great, and we are His magnificent, fearfully and wonderfully made creation. Use this small piece of science to show the undeniable greatness of God.
