We are the Light of the World

Angle 1:

Angle 2:

Needed:

  • Flashlights – as many as you can find in all different shapes, colors and sizes
  • At least one working flashlight
  • Batteries that fit the working flashlight
  • Trash
  • Dollar bill
  • Pills

Prep:

Before you begin the lesson, remove the batteries from the flashlight and stuff the battery area with trash, paper, a dollar bill and some medicine pills.  You want to make sure it is a larger flashlight as you might have trouble removing these items later if it is too small.

Lesson:

light1The Bible says that you are the light of the world but a flashlight cannot work if it’s not properly powered up.

Matthew 5:16 – Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Talk about how a flashlight has one purpose and that is to give light to those around it.

Pull out your working flashlight and try to turn it on. Act puzzled and then act the kids if they know why it isn’t working.

Say that we are going to have to take this apart to figure out what’s going on.

light2Take the flashlight apart and act astonished at what you find inside.

Say, “no wonder that this is working, it is so full of garbage inside. That’s just like us, for us to shine properly we have to repent and get the junk out of our life.”

Pull out the trash and paper and then pull out the money.

“Some people are so full of greed and the love for money that they cannot be used of God as a light.”

Shake out the pills and explain that some people are full of addictions such as drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and other similar afflictions.

Put the flashlight back together purposely leaving the batteries out.

light3Try to turn on the flashlight and act puzzled why it doesn’t work. Ask the kids if they know why it isn’t working.

SAY EXCITEDLY, “I know why it’s not working! IT DOESN’T HAVE POWER!”

Open the flashlight and put in the batteries incorrectly (have the 2 positive ends facing each other) and then put it back together.

Tell the kids, “Now it will work! and then try to turn it on.”

Once again, you are astonished that it doesn’t work. Open the flashlight up again.

light4Remark that you have figured it out. “The power was not put incorrectly. And that is just like some people that think they can live for God just any old way. They think it doesn’t matter if there is one God or 3 or if they speak in tongues or not. But it is important.”

Use this time to talk about the plan of salvation, repentance, baptism in Jesus name and receiving the Holy Ghost.

This time put the batteries incorrectly and put it all back together.

Turn it on and exclaim how wonderful it is that we can now be a light to the world around us.
