Angry Eggs in Your Face

About the Lesson:

eggs 2We have a noble steed in our class named Bro. Caleb Dillon.  You NEVER know what he is going to do next!  On this particular day we were teaching on Balaam and the talking donkey and he was focusing particularly on the odd fact that Balaam was SO angry at his donkey that it never even seemed odd to him that HIS DONKEY WAS TALKING!

Now to US, a donkey talking is freakish and would cause GREAT alarm, but to angry Balaam, it just made him more angry.

So, Bro. Caleb introduced a new “game” to the class, one called Egg Roulette.  There were a dozen eggs, half of which were raw and half of which were hard-boiled.

He called up an older boy who agreed to play and then Bro. Caleb explained the rules which were the following:

  1. They would in turn each grab an egg seemingly at random.
  2. After the appropriate dramatic pause they would smash it against their forehead.
  3. If it was hard-boiled you stayed alive but should you get a raw egg, you would get a negative point against you.
  4. After 4 points against you, you lost.

Before the game began however, Bro. Caleb began to brag to the class that he was a world-champion egg roulette player and that he had NEVER lost.

It was rigged ahead of time that both of the players knew which eggs they would pick, Bro. Caleb would get the raw and the other boy would get the hard-boiled.

eggs 1And so the game began.  Joseph, the other contestant, grabbed an egg and blithely smashed the hard-boiled thing against his head with no ill effect.  Bro. Caleb then smashed a raw egg against HIS forehead which splatted mightily and then oozed its way down his head onto his shirt.

Caleb became angry.  He claimed it was ALL LUCK!  Ridiculous, it just wouldn’t continue.  But it did.

Time after time, Joseph got hard eggs and Caleb raw until Caleb was a sodden, dripping mess, as was the stage and our once-beautiful backdrop.

eggs 3Caleb then lost his mind.

He began grabbing all of the eggs, screaming that it WASN’T FAIR! HE HAD NEVER LOST!  IT SHOULDN’T BE THIS WAY! And on and on he raved as he smashed egg after egg upon himself, ever-increased the devastation to his ego and clothing.

eggs 4Finally, he stopped and began to explain that when you get angry, you lose control and when you lose control you look like a fool.  Then he brought it all back to Balaam and likened his own situation to that of the prophet.

It was great lesson and one the kids are likely to never forget.
